What is hair loss?
Hair loss or alopecia, is the shedding or thinning of hair from the scalp or other areas of the body. It can occur gradually or suddenly, and the patterns of hair loss can differ widely. Some people notice diffuse thinning across the entire scalp, while others experience patchy bald spots or even complete hair loss in certain areas. Hair loss can be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause, and can affect people of any age.
Hair loss can present in different patterns, such as overall thinning, patchy bald spots, or complete hair loss in specific areas. Common signs include a receding hairline in men, a widening part in women, or sudden shedding caused by stress or illness. Some conditions like alopecia areata can cause localised bald patches. In some cases, scalp infections may lead to scaly patches and localized hair loss accompanied by redness and inflammation. Whether temporary or permanent, identifying the underlying cause is key to effective treatment.
What are the main types of hair loss?
Hair loss can occur for many reasons, and the way it presents can vary widely from person to person. Some types of hair loss develop gradually, while others can be sudden and dramatic. Understanding the specific type of hair loss you’re experiencing is essential for effective treatment.

Androgenetic Alopecia (Pattern Hair Loss)
The most common type of hair loss, affecting both men and women. It is genetically driven and caused by sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In men, it often presents as a receding hairline and thinning at the crown. In women, it usually appears as diffuse thinning along the part line.

Telogen Effluvium
Temporary hair shedding triggered by significant stress, illness, childbirth, surgery, or hormonal changes. It occurs when a large number of hair follicles enter the resting (telogen) phase simultaneously, causing noticeable thinning and shedding. Once the trigger is resolved, hair typically regrows within a few months.

Alopecia Areata
An autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to sudden, patchy hair loss. It can affect the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and other body areas. This type of hair loss affects approximately 2% of the population.
